Chalk Paint Buffet Makeover!

A few months back I was in my hometown and over at cousin Marshall and Jessica's house and spotted a piece of furniture in their dining room that was mid-makeover and fell in love. He was not into it so I offered to buy it off of him and he obliged! $120 for this beauty:

 ( Thanks Mrs Becky!!)

I decided to try to mimic a finish I saw in Ballards on the Casa Florentina line with some Annie Sloan Chalk Paint. (If you live in Nashville you can purchase Annie Sloan paint at C'est Moi on Church St. in Brentwood.)
We bought the "Duck Egg Blue" and the clear wax and the dark wax. Here is a pic so you can see how awesome the inside is, and see that we were not so ambitious as to paint the inside!
This is after the 1st ( and only coat of duck egg blue). Typically chalk paint does not require any prep work but Marsh had already primed it for me so.. that was cool. It looks weird until it dries. Ole Annie Sloan says paint all over the place very haphazardly and we thought that looked bad so we just painted it all traditional style with brushes ( not rollers as to conserve the paint).
 Close up:
Here is a pic of the front before any dark wax was applied. We did clear 1st then the dark. I don't know why the dark wax comes in such a big tub because you only use a smidge. The wax also is very smelly, and gave me a headache so mom and Erik did all this work! If you plan to do this be sure to put the clear wax on first so that you can wipe off as much of the dark as you want. Otherwise you will end up with a MUCH darker piece.
and here is the finished product with duck egg blue, clear wax then dark wax applied.
Close up of the finish. It is so hard to capture this paint color properly on camera.
And here are some pics once we moved it inside. The color looks different in every shot
You also can not tell from the pics but this thing is massive! It has great lines and I LOVE it!

This is the most accurate color of the actual piece. Now I will need a new mirror and buffet lamps! Stay tuned.

Tip Tuesday: Dress Your Tech

If you guys are like me, most of your family and friends have iphones now. Confusing chargers and cords is a real bummer so before this holiday season starts, print off some FREE customizable templates, and stick them on your gadgets to keep from getting swiped !

For Chic Sake has a FREE PDF download that you can customize with your own initials. This would make quick and cheap gifts for friends too!

Weekend Halloween Festivitis

We had a big weekend full of Halloween parties! CB had a fantastic Halloween Kiddie brunch that had so many delish food items! Peebs was quarantined in the back for most of it because he is not a good sharer and would not stop trying to interrupt the kiddie games.

That afternoon we had the Neighborhood Fall Festival. Peebs was SO cute in his Old Navy Monster costume and had a BALL. He ran as fast as he could till Erik and I were both exhausted. He tried to help himself to joining other kids in musical chairs, parachute games and volleyball.

This was the costume contest and food truck area!
and that night we had our 1st fire of the season but the flue was closed and set off the smoke alarm and it scared my boy to death! I have not gotten snuggles like that since he could walk!
Mom and Dad were in town this weekend and my momma is here for the week! I have to return her to daddy this weekend :( and we have a BUSY week full of projects!

This Week in Grizawood...

We have really been enjoying our new house, and I am not exaggerting at all when I say we have had guests every weekend ( except 1) since we moved in back in August! It has been great fun , and will continue on for the next several weeks as well!  We even have weekday guests sometimes so CB has started calling this the bed and breakfast! ha  All that to say we have been busy! Fenn has certainly loved all of the company and attention!

We have worked on a few awesome projects lately! Here is a sneak peak at the new pantry courtesy of pinterest and Camco Construction!
I LOVE LOVE LOVE it! I always wanted a really organized big pantry and since this house did not have one when we purchased, we added it. I love the can storage, the shelves for all of my casserole and entertaining dishes, the slots of platters and baking stuff. I still am working on filling it up and re-organizing all the kitchen cabinets in the process!

My helper thinks he has a new playroom.
I got this contact paper or shelf liner at TJ MAXX, 2 rolls for $5.99 and I LURVE it. I think it is the prettiest contact paper I have ever seen! They had lots of styles.

I can't believe I did this,  but I bought Teressa's Cookbook Fabulicious this week and I have to say it is interesting. I have not cooked from it yet but I do plan to cook my way through it. Having started reading it, I have to say that I do not think she is smart enough to write it.  It is so odd having watched her for years, and then reading what I feel like is a direct contrast to her personality ( except the cheap shots thrown in there)... I don't even know what to make of it! I am really impressed with the food science and discussion in it, and so far have learned a lot of basics for buying and cooking Italian stuff. It is probably the most interesting cook book I have ever read.

I saw another pinterest pic that inspired me to organize our coat closet. I always wanted a designated "coat closet" and we got one in this house that I love! I thought it was super cool to hang towel rods on  the doors for gloves and scarves!

Here is Fenn's school picture from MDO! I think it is hilarious and so cute!  He is now 27 months (2yrs 3 months) and BUSY. He never stops moving and doing stuff, UNLESS his girlfriend Dora is on. He is enjoying lots of art stuff lately like coloring, painting, making play dough.
We have had lots of discipline issues lately and after hearing SEVERAL people tell me I should be spanking his butt, I finally gave in. I totally thought I would be  a spanker, but turns out it killed me the 1st time I tried and I did not try again, until now. He just happens to be JUST as stubborn as both his parents so it takes a lot to get his attention. We also do time outs in the crib. Since getting serious about discipline he has been MUCH better.                     ( incidentally if you don't believe in spankings or time out or leg pops or whatever, I don't wanna hear about it).
He has been saying MUCH more  lately like " Rainbow, River, Ocean, Shark, YEAH, Woah, Mine, Bye Bye See you Later , On your mark, get set, GO" and thanks to Dora he thinks all horses are donkeys so every time he sees a horse he makes the MOST convincing donkey "hee-haw" you have ever heard.

This past weekend was my first 5K ever!  Unlike all my very cool runner blog friends and husband, I just do not care for races at all. I try to run about 3 times a week, and I am not too competitive about it, because I see the actual act of running AT ALL to be pretty dang special. ha I just do it for the exercise. But it was a neat experience. There were 10K people there which I think complicated it and it would have been more fun with a smaller crowd! But I made it!

Tip Tuesday: Turning on Kid Mode in iOS6

iOS 6 has a new feature that makes it possible to disable the hardware buttons of any ios device! ( lock the screen onto an app that makes it where kids can not exit the app no matter what they push or touch)

Instructions:

Enabling “Kid Mode” in iOS with Guided Access

You will need iOS 6 or later to have this feature.
  • Go to SETTINGS > then GENERAL

  • Scroll down and click on  “Accessibility”

  • Then choose "Guided Access"

Turn to ON, then tap “Set Passcode” to set a password you’ll use to escape out of Guided Access mode.

Now that Guided Access is configured, you can use it to lock the iOS device into any app you want.

To turn it on:

  • Launch the app of choice and simply  triple-click the Home button to summon the Accessibility menu

  • Thanks to @mrsjuliebray for sending me this tip! It was adapted from an article on OSXDaily

Tip Tuesday: Removing Facebook Integration with ios6

You guys may have noticed a big change in your address book and calendar since ios6 was added. If you agreed to integrate facebook it automatically added all of your facebook "friends" into your contacts and put their birthdays on your calendar on the iphone.

This was pretty overwhelming ( annoying) to me so I took it to twitter and my tweeps helped me out!!
To change this it takes 2 seconds.

Go into your contacts.
Select " Groups"  in the top left corner

it will bring you to a screen like this. ( I have lots of groups.. overlook that ha)
See where it shows "Facebook" in its own section? Just touch it to select and unselect. Once you unselect all those peeps will be removed from your contacts.

Same concept with calendars. You have to go to Calendars and then the Facebook section and select or unselect the events and calendars.

Tip Tuesday : How to take Panoramic Pictures with the iPhone 5

How to take panoramic pics with the iPhone 5!

Go to camera and select the option button shown below:

 click on panorama
It will bring up this screen showing you how long you have to move the camera and you will span the camera across the shot while it is moving. When you are ready to start shooting, hit the camera button.
and end up with one long great shot. Instead of a straight panoramic shot, I used it to shoot the entire room and show 3 of the 4 walls. It is a really neat way to show a room.

Halloween Prep & Decor!

I LOVE fall because it mean I get to put out all my pretty fall decor! Here is a pic of the front porch before I have added any Halloween decor. It's been rainy so once that passed I will decorate the outside as well. Hope all my new neighbors can appreciate my East Nashville yard flair!

New wreaths in the foyer. I had forgotten about all the clearance Halloween decor I bought last year and I was so excited to find it in my boxes this year!

I LOVE the mantel decor. It looks better in person though. I have 2 urns I plan to spray paint black and use as the vase for these pumpkin topiaries!

The built ins are so fun to decorate!

Dining room table:
a little morbid for my usual taste but I like all the glitter!

Mickey Mouse plastic light up pumpkin for my boy! ( from walgreens)
Gel window clings from the Target dollar bin. He LOVES these.
I scored this adorable monogrammed canvas treat bucket from Lands End! They had a 40% off code and I snatched this up so quick!

and these are in Target this year. I have always wanted a tree that I could decorate for each holiday. This one is black, and I prefer metallic so I can use it at Christmas, Easter etc.. so I just took a pic.
