Tile is a very complicated situation....

I doubt anyone ever thinks much about all the thought that goes behind a bathroom! I know I NEVER had any idea.. until recently. I haven't mentioned much about the shower b/c its such a disaster, and I wasn't sure how it was gonna be resolved until recently. The woman we bought the house from has been real cool about working with us to fix this and this week she told me she would just send me the money and let me deal with the details and choose who we hire. I'm really excited to have found a competent tile guy, who isn't a crack head! Now all we have to do is figure out what is to be done. He cant repair the shower with the existing tile because its been discontinued and we don't have any extra pieces of it.. which means an entirely new design. At first i was like " Oh this is RAD" and then i realized just how many options there actually are.
  • The color scheme and finish of the tile
  • the materials like tumbled marble, porcelain, slate
  • the direction in which to lay the tile. normal, brick style, diagonal
  • the color grout to use
  • the size tile to use
I mean this goes ON and ON. So now I have pictured a few of the ones i liked and I wanna hear what you all think about it. Especially if you have any experience with these in your bathroom. If you come across any great pics of shower designs I would love those too!

Awww it is too bad that you are not closer. You remember Chris, my brother? Well he owns a tiling company here in Fairhope. He does custom tile work. And he is amazing! And NO I am not biased because he is my brother! :0)
Oh and I like either the 2nd or the 3rd option!

I retiled my bathroom floor a few months ago...make sure you spell out exactly what the guy is supposed to do. My guy ended up not sealing the tile, nor did he bolt my toilet back down to the floor. But I only paid him $250 for labor and materials, so I guess I deserved the slack service. Grout color: mine dried lighter than I wanted it to (it almost looks purple - called koala). I would go with the darkest, then hope it dries in the mid tone range. I like the first design because it has the small tiles to break it up. I think that is a must. And I don't know who your tile guy is, but be sure you watch the work going in place...if a tile is out of square or a grout line is not uniform, MAKE HIM FIX IT. It will bother you for the rest of your life (while you live in that house) if you don't. And the tile layer should be better than that. I love remodeling!

You might consider ersatz marble before you quit looking.

I like the first option best...I have a color similar to that in my bathrooms.

My only advice is to get DARK GROUT!!! Light grout is going to show more dirt...dark grout gets just as dirty, it just doesn't show it as bad, lol!!

I am sooo lucky, my husband can lay tile, so we redo stuff every so often.
