Granpa's Political Corner: North American Union?

For the last 100 years or so the United States led the world in manufacturing and developing wealth with a large middle class. Our policy on immigration was intended to provide a controlled flow of immigrants that we could assimilate into our society and welcome as citizens. These immigrants wanted to become a part of our nation, they came here to do just that. We have accepted this concept and the fundamentals of immigration have not changed much during that time. We took pride in our nation, our form of government, our Constitution and our freedom. We have been the powerhouse of the world during this time.

For the last 100 years or so the world has been changing. The people population has grown tremendously (and one day will exceed the ability of the earth to sustain it), other nations have developed and will soon surpass our nation in wealth and manufacturing. The powerhouse status is being passed to India, China and Russia. Our policies of taxation and free trade have accelerated the process of helping to develop other nations and our nation is becoming largely oriented toward technology. Politically we slide further along the road to socialism.

For the past 100 years or so it would seem that we have learned nothing about how to govern in the nations best interest. Our government, like its citizens, has not accepted a basic rule, "One cannot spend more than one has". In education our government refuses to believe the old saw, "One can lead a horse to water but you can not make him drink". Our government continues to believe we can "police the world", we can't. When we are born one of the first things we do is gasp for breath and in so doing we begin to compete for the atmosphere's oxygen. Competition teaches us and failure is a vivid reminder of our responsibility. Education is no different and students must understand the consequences of failure. "Gifted" students should not be required to study at the same rate as those who can not or choose not to study.

If we make the assumption that China, India and Russia will become the powerhouse for the near future, how has the United States prepared for the future? It seems to me that our government has attempted to unite the nations of North America into a union which presents a unified trade zone. I suspect that the government dreams of the union including both North and South America. To accomplish the goals "free" and other trade agreements have been arranged. Some of these agreements cover much more than "trade". The leaders of the United States, Mexico and Canada, in 2005, agreed to the "Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America" (SPP) and set an agenda to accomplish the goals they had set forth. These agreements are unbelievably complex and the government has, to my knowledge, made no attempt to articulate its position or reasons for the agreements. Pertinent to this discussion is the desire to have free flow of trade and people wherever the y wish to go.
If we accept this concept it becomes clear why the government has no intention of interfering with the invasion of millions of migrants into our nation. The Secretary of Homeland Security, Michael Chertoff represents the United States on a SPP committee. Congress and the office of the President apparently want to make all the migrants citizens of the United States.

Is the trade off of a North American Union worth the loss of a sovereign nation, the loss of borders, laws as defined by the North American Union, the loss of our constitution, the loss of freedom, as we know it? Will America knuckle under to control by the NAU? There are many unanswered questions but at least you have some insight as to why we are invaded by migrants.

What is the position of your elected official in Washington?
